You know the saying, “Your eyebrows are sisters, not twins”? Well, my eyebrows were more like distant relatives and completely different from each other! I’ve struggled with my brows for so long and even after watching hundreds of tutorials I still couldn’t master the art of filling them in properly. So when the opportunity of microblading presented itself, I was all in!
I’ve shared bits and pieces of my microblading experience on my different social accounts but in today’s post I’m going to get down to the nitty gritty and share everything you need to know and the crazy before and after photos that prove why microblading has seriously been life changing for me.
I’ve seen so many talented microblading artists online but I was lucky enough to connect with Natalia of Studio N, a local artist here in Edmonton. If you check out her instagram account @studio.n.beauty you will quickly realize why she is one of the best in the city and why I entrusted her to pimp my brows!
I received a handful of questions about my brows and the microblading process so I figured the easiest way to cover everything would be to do a little Q&A! If there’s something I missed though please don’t hesitate to message me and I’ll do my best to help!
Ok, let’s get into it and brace yourselves for some up close and personal photos (you’ve been warned)…
What is microblading?
Microblading is a form of tattooing where pigment is implanted under your skin with a handheld tool instead of a traditional tattoo gun. The tool Natalia used on my brows was small, I’d say tweezer size, which allowed her to create hair like strokes to blend in with my natural brow hairs.
What should I look for in a microblading artist?
Two things- are they using best practices to create a safe and clean environment? And do you love their work?
I’ve never gotten a tattoo before and I’m a bit of a germaphobe, especially when it comes to needles, so making sure the artist I went to was working in a clean environment was really important to me. After speaking with Natalia she explained her background was in immunology and infection so making sure her work environment is not only clean but safe is a big priority for her. She also mentioned you should always ask about sterilization and make sure the artist is Alberta health inspected and insured! Good points to keep in mind if you’re looking to have your brows microbladed.
Next, I would take a look at their portfolio to see their previous work. At the end of the day you are getting a tattoo on your face so trusting in the artists work is SO important!
How will I know what eyebrow shape is be best for me?
Remember when I said my eyebrows were more like distant relatives than twins? Well, Natalia had her work cut out for her as I had NO idea what shape my brows should be going into my appointment. Thankfully, Natalia did an amazing job, working with me to create the perfect shape for my face.
Natalia started out by lining and filling in my brows. We would go back in forth, taking away a bit here, measuring a bit there, until she created the perfect shape! Natalia was very clear that we wouldn’t start anything until I felt 100% happy with the way they looked.
Psst. if your brows are in need of a little TLC like mine, Natalia offers complimentary consultations!
How long will it last?
Micoroblading can last anywhere from 1-3 years but it really all depends on the person and a handful of other variables. For example, sun exposure, iron deficiency, and frequent exfoliating (chemical peels or facials) will all decrease the life span of the tattoo. Also, oily skin and frequent sweating can lead to your tattoo fading quicker.
Typically microblading requires two appointments, one for the initial procedure and the second for the touch up to help lock in the pigment. Natalia offers the second appointment, which follows 6-12 weeks after the initial procedure, free of charge! Gotta love that.
Does it hurt?
Hands down this was the number one question I was asked about my microblading experience. And trust me, I get it, I’m not a huge fan of needles or pain either! But let me tell you, it definitely wasn’t as bad as I thought! Before and during the treatment Natalia applied a topical anesthetic which numbed the area and seriously worked wonders. I couldn’t feel a thing! However, throughout the treatment if it started to wear off I would simply let Natalia know and she would reapply the cream, making the appointment almost painless. I say almost painless because towards the end of the treatment my eyebrows did feel a little tender but it was more than bearable, I swear!
How long does the procedure take?
This will vary person to person but on average it will take anywhere from 1.5-3 hours from the start of the brow planning process to the end of the actual procedure.
Will I need downtime afterwards?
Again, it really depends on the person. I had the procedure done with my girlfriend and during our initial treatment she experienced some redness, while my brows didn’t experience irritation. However, for our touchup appointment we had a total role reversal.
Although I wouldn’t say you need any downtime afterwards, I wouldn’t suggest booking your appointment right before any major events as your brows will flake during the healing process. I’d give your brows a full 2 weeks before they’re fully healed but more on that in the next question…
What is the healing process like?
The healing process was not what I expected going into the procedure but Natalia gave me the full rundown and reassured me that i shouldn’t be alarmed throughout the process. If you know anything about microblading then you would know that immediately afterwards your brows will look pretty dark. They’ll be like that for a couple days but will gradually start to lighten after that. Mine lightened to a grey colour in some areas and almost looked gone, but I was reassured that this was totally normal and after a couple weeks they settled into the perfect shade.
As I mentioned earlier your brows will flake during the process which wasn’t the most attractive at some points but to have beautiful brows as a result it was totally worth it!
Can I wear makeup afterwards?
No, not for about 2 weeks while your brows are healing but you can wear makeup everywhere else!
Ok, now I want fab brows! Where in Edmonton can I get them done again?
I’m so glad you asked (totally added this question in myself haha)! If you’re in the market for a brow upgrade I would seriously and honestly recommend Natalia at Studio N. She was amazing and made the whole experience as comfortable and as painless as possible!
Studio N was also kind enough to offer you a discount! If you mention me or my blog you will receive 10% off their services so don’t hesitate to reach out. You can find all the contact info on their website here.
Remember when I said having my brows microbladed was life changing? Well here’s proof of my crazy caterpillars turning into beautiful butterflies (I know, so cheesy but I couldn’t resist!)…
